Re: BLURT thread

How'd it go?

I didn't directly indicate my intentions to my coworker, but we're going to get dinner next week, for work-related reasons (he's presenting to my class on research studies he's designed and conducted). It will be good to hang out with him in a different context.

Re: A whine and complain thread

God dang it my work schedule has just changed for the worse. I've spent the last two months training for a particular type of class and, under this prospective schedule, I have zero of those classes (Also! These are the classes where I would have actually been able to meet and interact with other e...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Ian, what is your goal? Do you want people to like you or not like you? If your goal is to get people to like you, it may help to walk through some possible scenarios. Scenario 1: People here do not dislike you or hate you. How do you think those people will feel if you keep telling them that you kn...

Re: A whine and complain thread

There's a difference between not posting at all and specifically ignoring someone. A quick look at his post history shows he hasn't posted since the 12th. Does that mean he's ignoring me and Esbe too? When I say that you internalize things and make them about you when they actually aren't, does that...

Re: A whine and complain thread

When I was a kid, just after my parents got a divorce, my mom made me see a therapist. She's a big believer in therapy because it helped her deal with trauma from her childhood that would and has emotionally and psychologically crippled countless others. She wanted to make sure that I was coping wit...

Re: A whine and complain thread

You're wrong. And I don't like the implication that I'm lying. I am a straightforward person and if I don't like someone, I tell them.

Stop suggesting that I am lying. I don't like it.

Re: BLURT thread

As long as we're talking about the trials and tribulations of physical and/or romantic relationships, I may as well share that I'm trying to woo a coworker of mine. He's eight years older than me (thirty-three to my twenty-five), which can definitely work to my advantage. I've known him for about tw...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Skimba's comment was not a dig at you. That woman from the dating site not responding to you for a period of time was not a dig at you. I believe that Skimba's comment is in regard to the conversation between Enty and me, and the woman from the dating site not responding was because of her phone. I ...

Re: BLURT thread

Stuff happens in people's lives. It's rude of her not to respond to you, but I wouldn't internalize it. For all you know, she died (in which case her not responding isn't actually rude). If you really think this is because of something you did, you can share your conversation up until she stopped re...

Re: BLURT thread

When? And why? Which part of Florida? I have so many questions. As a child I was underwhelmed by Orlando. It is unbelievably tourist-y and overpriced, so I'd only recommend going if you're a huge Disney fan, have a sizable budget, and don't mind large crowds. I can't remember which beach we went to ...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Tinder is pretty exclusively for hookups, so if that's not your thing I wouldn't recommend it. I hardly ever get hit on when I go out to bars, but I kill it when I go on dating sites. OKCupid is my preferred one. My digital rhetoric is on point and I can generally communicate better through written ...

Re: A whine and complain thread

We will always be more ignorant of these things than the target audience as white people, just like you'll always be more ignorant of stereotypes about women than I will be, I'll always be more ignorant of stereotypes against gay women than a gay woman would be, etc.

Re: A whine and complain thread

Well, it's a stereotype that wouldn't really be aimed at you. That's one of the benefits of being white. My brother had heard the racial slur "sp*c," but didn't know what it meant. When he said it in front of our Costa Rican American friend, however, the latter was very quick to point out ...

Re: A whine and complain thread

It's okay, but when it comes to rhetoric, how you say something matters a lot more than what you meant. You could have told a male coworker the same thing and he probably wouldn't have cared. You could also jokingly call a white coworker lazy, but would obviously be wary of making the same joke to a...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Don't worry, Chrism, I know how to handle myself. You can put away your concern about my feelings getting in the way of my work. Having negative feelings when you are mistreated is natural and not inherently unprofessional. I have had negative feelings. Letting your negative feelings show in a profe...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Don't worry, I'm not beating myself up; I'm good at not internalizing the poor decisions that others make around me. I am upset with them and the situation, not with myself. I am a good teacher and a smart person, and I know when I'm being disrespected and condescended to. Even when I'm in a positio...

Re: A whine and complain thread

I may be posting here a lot. My boss has not supported me at all with these students. He has snidely accused me of overreacting, being overemotional, and escalating the situation. He's also implied that this is about my ego rather than basic rickin'-frackin' classroom management. He told me, "W...
