Re: A whine and complain thread

If you want dating advice that doesn't involve taking any kind of positive action to improve your own self-image, you don't want dating advice. But here's some! Eye contact, don't slouch (if your nose is further forward than your chest when you're walking around, you don't look confident), smile at ...

Re: This telephone pictionary is as many as four tens

I have received my line. I'll be letting it brew for a couple of days because I have a nasty old travel schedule (14-hour night bus to Tokyo, 15ish hours to kill in Tokyo, 20-hour midnight flight to the UK. Hopefully Tokyo has like... shower... booths, or something). I'll get right on it after my hi...

Re: A whine and complain thread

What you do for a living both occupies a huge proportion of your time and hugely affects your self-esteem. If you're doing something that keeps you occupied and makes you feel good, you'll be happier. If you're happier, you'll be more positive and more attractive. If you're looking to find a girl/bo...

Re: THE HAPPY THREAD

So I'm in Japan being woken up by all the hostelfolk waking up around me. I'm in Fukuoka to meet with one of the regional managers from my future workplace, then I'll be heading to Chiba to meet with another. Whoops, I have an email offering me a job in Tokyo to start in November! The work situation...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Well like I say, I found care work pretty good. It's easy to get and it's satisfying (although often tough, for various reasons). There's not a huge career path from it, sadly (I guess you can study to go into nursing). As for moving to another country, I picked an English-speaking country so that h...

Re: A whine and complain thread

To be honest Ian, it seems to me like you're stuck in a rut. You don't seem to feel particularly fulfilled by the things you do. You could try doing something different. It's easier said than done, of course. I mean, I got a working visa and lived in Canada in 2011-12 because I had a decidedly unple...

Re: BLURT thread

Yah, I'm not looking forward to being in Essex sans car when I get home. All the more reason to tool around Asia for a few weeks! In international-bus-related news, I feel like British and Korean bus drivers should meet up and learn from one another. Each country's bus drivers have glaring gaps in t...

Re: A whine and complain thread

On an unrelated note (but don't worry! This is about me !), I'll be finishing my Korea job on Friday. It's now a sad thing! The problems I had with the students are pretty much gone. I'm now just dealing with an ordinary-teaching level of stress rather than a barely-prepared-illegal-for-two-weeks-co...

I'll take a picture, duhh preferably near the end. Travel plans may make it hard to keep up for the next few weeks.

Re: A whine and complain thread

I was supposed to be trying to find work in Korea this week (as I'll be out of work at the end of the month), but apparently I haven't done it today. I got caught up with trying to arrange meeting my sister in Seoul over Chuseok (a harvest celebration, a long weekend from the 26th-29th.. followed by...

Re: BLURT thread

I was driven to read some old posts (James' sig thread, prompted by the memory of 'ooey gooey worms'), and oh old times. I recall this forum during my university days. It was my internet home, where I had to consciously avoid posting while drunk. So many people, such amusement. I had it as my home p...

Re: Video Game Stuff

I'm trying to play Starcraft and I just can't. How do people learn this stuff? People on YouTube seem to know exactly what to do, but the whole arrangement is so arcane I can't figure it out even a tiny bit. It probably doesn't help that I'm trying to play Zerg, which appears to be the most difficul...

Re: BLURT thread

Oh dear. I hope the booze troubles dry up soon SYG! Korea update: I'm heading off at the end of September. I shall perhaps go via Japan and the Phillipines because I don't need a visa to visit those places so why not. When the replacement chap's documents came through I had a meeting with my manager...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Blurgh more students are apparently on the point of leaving because of my classes. I'm surprised a job can go this badly, but there you go. I can't wait to leave (at the end of August!), and I'm sure my manager can't either. Hopefully there will still be a few good students left by then.

Re: A whine and complain thread

Bleh I feel sad. I don't want to go home, but I'm also currently not loving travelling either. My basic problem is that just about everyone I know is in a couple, which means they do all their social things as couples. I go out and see people in bars on Saturdays, and do very little else ever. There...

If you ever want to give the 9-12 age bracket another crack, come spend 2 months here, we'll get you a criminal reference check and some volunteer papers and experience. I teach all in French, so it might not be exactly what you'd visualize, however the mannerisms, techniques, assignments and stuff...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Okay I just sent an email to my prospective replacement telling them that it's a good place to work. And :( because it would have been a good place for me if the students hadn't hated me quite so passionately. But yeah, I tried to turn it around and it basically did not work and I had no other ideas...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Okay okay. Friday way a nightmare day. Overall. Then I met up with some buds who reassured me that everyoe's first year is a horrorshow and that the trick is to not care whether I'm doing a good job because nobody here knows what a good job even looks like anyway. Students come and go, and the forei...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Today was better; I worried less about the textbooks and gave them more interesting stuff, like team exercises and get-the-work-done races and such. With candy prizes, and consolation prizes for the losers. It was better, but I still had to pull out the textbook and give them some of that work, and ...

Alright I'll try Her Story. Sound interesting. In looking it up, I also came across LISA, which seems kind of interesting. You (apparently) make choices that affect you in ways that actually make a difference, like you get your arm lopped off or whatever. Seems like one of those games that get spoil...

Re: A whine and complain thread

Ah yes. Well I'm teaching English to kids from, say, 7 to 15. Some older students and some younger ones. The older and younger ones are actually going well; I'm easy-going and have good subject knowledge, which the older ones appreciate, and with the younger ones I can... run around and make noises,...
