BEHIND THE SCENES

So, I have this big honkin' list of spam subjects, as you might imagine, that I append to every time one catches my eye. Then when I get the time/inclination to do some new comics, I go read the list and pick the ones that seem the most promising.

Usually I don't bother checking the forum to see if one of you guys has already done it, because if it turned out you had, I would feel lame and have to start over with a different line, and that's just time-consuming. Better to forge ahead, unawares!

There weren't really any serviceable puns to be had in "impress the females", so I just decided to draw a generic awesome dude.

As I was drawing him, I realized that he should have a van, and that something should be airbrushed on the van. Almost immediately, the phrase "sexual wizard" popped into my head, and I knew I had to use it. The thing I love most about it is how dumb it is. It's not a "sex" wizard, it's a "sexual" wizard, which, you know, somehow seems less crass.

This then dictated that there had to be an ACTUAL WIZARD on the van, lest anyone think I was suddenly dealing in metaphor. I also remembered a picture that my friend took in Vegas of a machine called the Change Wizard or something that had a photo of a guy dressed up like a wizard in a similar pose. I quickly drew the wizard and cracked myself up. I love his facial expression so much.

The tattoo was a straight-up Crumb reference (sorry Jiu) because:

1. It seemed like something this dude should have
2. I kind of hate Crumb. OK, not hate, strong dislike.
3. I like to put in tiny things like this to see how many of you are paying attention to that level of detail.

The wolf shirt was a given. I was a little nervous about it, because I've done that joke before, and I really don't mean any offense to people who actually wear wolf shirts. My own mother has been known to wear animal shirts on occasion, and I would never diss my mother. I just think they're awesome and hilarious, and absolutely something that our hero would wear in this strip. I decided to up the ante a bit by making it sleeveless.

Those are my notes for now.
