*OLD* Potential New Users READ THIS *OLD*

Postby PonderThis » Sun Jun 07, 2009 9:58 am

Hi! So you're thinking of registering a new account. I think that's great. I think we have a fun little community here of people who like drawing and reading spamusement cartoons and stuff. But unfortunately there's a bamillion spambots out there, and lately we've been getting hit with like a dozen a day. This means that all new user registrations are set so they do not get activated until reviewed by a moderator, which is me or Nik or stevenf.

To streamline the process, there is a registration question titled, "Convince us you are not a spambot". Just enter a short sentence or two that indicates you're actually interested in this forum. Mention your favorite spamusement comic or some such.

Remember, we want you to become a member, this "new user review" situation is only to keep the spambots out.

Oh, and welcome to Spamusement! :)

UPDATE: OK, this process has been flawed for the last eight months or so and let in so many spambots that it was impossible to keep up. IF YOU HAVE TRIED TO REGISTER AND NEVER GOT ACTIVATED please try again. The "Convice us you're not a spambot" question is new and will allow you to stand out from the bots.

ALSO: I'll be trying to find more ways to weed out spambots. Once I find we're weeding out most spambots I hope to be getting rid of the "admin review" and just let y'all right in!

I'm agreeing with what Ponder said. It's much easier to determine who is or is not a spambot by what is in a user's profile. If you have an avatar, a signature (that is not a link and makes actual sense), information about yourself, etc, it's very helpful. And if time has gone by and you haven't been activated, contact us or make a new account that's more discernible. Thanks, guys!

I think we've determined that you're for real by now.

Unless you're "Oh oh"-ing because of somebody you directed here...?

Can people change their avatars or signatures before their membership is approved? I honestly don't remember.

I know people can, at least, make profiles. That's how I used to weed out a lot of the spammers.

Now we're just going to breed antibiotic-resistant "super" spambots which will appear human to all but the most diligent of Turing Test administrators. Is that what you want? An intarweb where someone you think you've known for years can turn out just to be a spambot? The thought is truly chilling and the only way I can think to warm myself up is to go somewhere to find some hot pictures of naked gurlies doing fun sex thangs with other unclothed humans.

Well, if that happens, then the only way we'll know for sure (within reason) is if they actually spamuse. If they can do that, well...

THANK GOODNESS. That was really pissing me off.
Seriously, how many actual new users do we get? They sure as poopcakes aren't posting anything.

I still say the "worst song" was better than the "best song".

Affirmative, if only for the operatic rapping.

No, for all of it. It was so charmingly deranged; pretty much every bit was amusing.

I have a question. Where does the worst song ever (edit: or was is the most unwanted song?) come from? I found it in a "wtf lol" song pack of a DDR clone called StepMania and just love it (the operatic rapping IS indeed the best part).

EDIT: found http://www.wired.com/listening_post/200 ... ntific-at/. That must be it, right?

Please don't start mashing together a muskrat and a pile of sticks. That can only end badly.
