I agree with all the recommendations Ponder made.. and I'm glad it's him taking the reigns of such an operation.
In my opinion, forums.spamusement isn't really representative of what this place is.. or will be. Surely we want the option of doing other things? Not just being an homage to dead web space? Particularly when Mr F has expressed disinterest.. Not that I'm blaming him for anything, I think we've been given a great thing to this point and I'm grateful for the effort he's put in.
Going forward, Spamusers.com just feels better. I really like spambience for some reason.
Maybe some more ideas about what would actually be featured would help people make a decision before it comes to a poll.
An in-built, open-minded community that fosters creativity without stifling it unnecessarily could become rather popular once it's out on its own.
Maybe ditch the whole spam thing.

Yeah that's not bad either, I agree. I don't agree with the separation from spamusement though, because even though we as a forum are so much more than that, the affiliation is what pre-screens our participants so well for us before they even get to Ponder and Nik (sometimes). I like who we are, and I also like how we got that way. Just my opinion.

Just got a PM from stevenf, we're on for a move this weekend. He'll start his end Friday night or Saturday morning, hand off the backups to me, and I'll get things back up as soon as I can. He'll give us a heads up before he actually starts.

Given this is our last day being a part of the actual Spamusement site, we should probably do a spamusement or two? OUI NON?

Not to worry, enty, I work with databases and web servers as part of my day job. I should be able to muddle my way through this.

Also, I tried to find the most reliable host I could. I started with advertisers on the phpBB site. I figured that if they're advertising there they should be able to handle a phpBB board. Then I searched various web host review sites and settled on icdsoft. One of the things I like about them is their blurb on backups:

We perform daily system backups, which are kept for seven days on a separate backup server. The archived data includes the files ... and the MySQL databases that are present on the server at the time the backup is performed. Customers can also create their own backups and download them or keep them in their hosting accounts. Backed up data can be restored through the web hosting Control Panel.

So, we stand on the edge of the dawn of a new age of spam. I do hope StevenF pops in now and then. I suppose if I really wanted to, I could do some sort of metaphor about StevenF being the parent of the Spamusement child that's grown up, moved out and changed its name, but that seems all too soppy.

Just got an update from stevenf. His rough guesstimate for a start time is 10 AM - 11 AM Pacific time, which is actually afternoon my time, so that gives me plenty of time to re-re-read the instructions and so forth.

Ha ha - a little comedy joke there!

The basic procedure is:

1. I put the board in maintenance mode. This changes nothing except you won't be able to log in and post stuff while we're moving.

2. I pack up the database and send it over to Ponder. I don't delete my copy of the database.

3. Ponder loads the database into his copy of the forum software.

4. I re-configure my web server to redirect the forum URLs over to his site.

And that's pretty much that! Note that after step 4 I still have a copy of the database frozen in time (THROUGH TIME) from before the move, so if everything goes to hell (it won't) we can simply roll back the savings and we're back here with everything as we left it.
