Spamusement Pop Quiz!

Postby EsBe » Thu Apr 29, 2010 2:57 am

Okay, I had an idea for a project: remember those matching tests you sometimes got in elementary school, the ones with words in one list and definitions in a second list, where you had to find the matching pairs? What if we did that with existing guest strips? As in: present a bunch of spam lines and their corresponding comics, and challenge people to match them.

The thing is, our brains are probably already wired in such a way that we could correlate spam line and comic in the blink of an eye (assuming we haven't memorized the back catalog of spamusements already---which I... may have done...) so this is something I'd want to unleash on a separate unsuspecting internet community, just to see how they'd fare. Anyway, anyone else think it would be a good idea to do something like this?

I like the idea. Maybe you could include some of the more absurd ones, like this. Or maybe that's a bit too evil...

I still think we should have a spamusement game section. Anyone know how to program things? Like a spamusement memory game?

Yeah, I'd really like to do that at some point. I have several ideas on the subject, mainly regarding how to automate telephone pictionary or spamusement: the comic. For now that's all on the backburner while we get the current stuff done, but if anyone would like to do some brainstorming on how you'd like such a thing to work, post it over here or feel free to start a new thread on the subject.

Well I went randomly skimming the Wiki last night (read: brute-forcing every Spamuser page 'cause I had nothing else to do...) and found a number of comics that are just subtle enough to make tricky puzzles (take her from behind is a good example). Maybe we could go through our own comics and list the ones that would be challenging to match; that would make compiling the list of comics go a lot quicker.

Oh no you don't. This is your puzzle, you do the work! Besides, you don't want us to peek at possible answers before hand, do you?

Okay, fair enough. I just assumed that veteran Spamusers wouldn't even be challenged by it. :P

Hey, I wouldn't mind doing it. (Especially if we had a spoiler tag...)

EDIT: By the way, "go sign" appears to be the last one where I saved as a JPEG. So if you don't want to assault them with compression artifacts...

So I finished the quiz. Needs to be hosted on the Spamusers website, because it needs PHP to work. Basically, it's just a page full of 171 images with a dropdown menu of all the spam lines below each one. Kinda unwieldy, but xwhatever. If anyone wants to improve it, the most useful bit would just be a prettier layout (I'm not a big web design guy :?). The next best thing would be some sort of Javascript to notify the client when they pick the same spam line for two comics (though I can also do that by myself, given a bit of research on the subject) or something like a popup list of all the possible spam lines, so you don't have to scroll through tiny dropdown menus to browse them.

Download is here. You can peruse the comics without any PHP interpreter if you'd like, and of course if anyone has some comics they think would be good additions to the quiz, go ahead and PM them. I actually whittled down the list from a total of 480ish potential comics, but a few more wouldn't hurt anyone if there's popular demand for them.

I haven't really been able to find anything helpful about the quiz thing. Ideally I would like 50 questions out of however many there are now that would be randomly displayed. It would be cool if the correct answer was always displayed each time the quiz was taken, but the false answers were randomly displayed from a master list. Also it would be scored. :/ That's a tall order, but I haven't found anything that would be eaily applied to improve the current quiz.

I'd prefer if we didn't have to host it on some site with millions of ads, and instead could host it here.

I've been searching tirelessly in sourceforge and the net for something I can make quality. I keep getting distracted by thought of card games featuring spamusement characters on the cards. Also it's hard to search without getting stupid things and sourceforge is not quite as searchable as it should be.

Hmm.

Cabinet Sanchez 5

Legendary Artifact Creature - Construct

When Cabinet Sanchez is wrong, sacrifice Cabinet Sanchez.

0/5

I can only conclude that said cards would not be very good.

A wild TROY POWELL appears.
CABINET SANCHEZ uses SABER SLASH.
It was super effective!

what ever happened to that blank card game that went around a couple years ago? i tried to search for it but apparently "game" and "card" are too common to be allowed to be put into a search

That blank card thread pleased me.
I would like to take this quiz. Surely someone knows how to do simple programming and the like.
