Old Missing Comics

Anybody that's gone looking through the spamuser comic list from the beginning has noticed a large number of missing comics. I have just finished a program that has gone through the source of that list (all the threads in the Spamuser Comics forum), read the image information into a local database on my computer, and looked to see which threads have good images. Out of 9346 threads 1118 are missing images.

Here is the list of all those missing images.

What does this mean to you? See the next post below for a summary of good/missing images by user. And I think you'll find that a few of these don't matter so much. For example under my name I found three missing images, but two of those were just images I had found on the internet to "fit" the subject line so no real loss there.

If you're on the list, see if you can find your old comics, repost them somewhere and edit your old posts. If editing your old posts is too much trouble, send me the list of reposted images and I'll do the fixing for you. And if that's too much trouble you can email me your images in a zip file and I'll take it from there.

Sometime soon I plan on creating a new subforum of Spamuser Comics with some snappy title like "Well of Souls" or "Land of the Lost" or something and I'll write a program to move all those threads with missing images over there so that the front page list no longer has any missing images!

Also I will from time to time re-run the original program and see if any images have disappeared over time.

This is very cool. But I cannot imagine which picture I could possibly have missing, unless it was the one I was asked to remove. I'll look into it when I get a chance.

Take a look at the detailed list here. Maybe it's not anything to worry about. Like I noted, two of my own missing three images were just undoctored images straight from the internet. That was just laziness on my part originally anyway so I'm like pbbbbb who cares about those two?

Dammit! I just realized that some items are missing from the list since photobucket doesn't give you a 404 error it instead gives you this:

Done and fixed. It wasn't supposed to be there anyway. I really should move all my imageshack pics to photobucket.

Could you do a secondary search, based on the size of the picture that photobucket displays? (keep in mind, I don't really know what I'm talking about, or how one would actually do that. It's just a thought.)

The actual image is a 120x120 gif, so that's not a terrible idea loofs.

Have you taken the photobucket thing into account yet? That's where all mine are hosted, so if any were deleted by administrators*...

Who knows whether I'd be able to restore them, anyway. The compy most of the pictures were on is gone. If any have disappeared, I may just redraw with my current techniques or something.

*Probably unlikely, unless they made assumptions based on filenames.

There was someone (CheapAlert, maybe?) whose comics were all replaced by a picture of a long-exposure night highway. Would that show up as a missing image?

Cheapie's all show as missing now so I guess it's a moot point. I haven't updated and re-run the utility yet, but I figure I should probably get the new forum created and move a few of the "missings" over there just to get an idea of how this is going to work. Still need a good "spamusey" name though. "Well of Souls" is nice and Indiana Jones-y but doesn't quite fit. "Land of the Lost" ... it's OK I guess. "Dead Letter Office" ... mmmmnnnnah. Too REM. Although I see from Wiki that such places are now called "Mail Recovery Centers" ... "Waiting for Godot"? Too existential. Anyone else?
