Spamusement in Literature

So, I was reading Oscar Wilde's essay "The Decay of Lying: An Observation," when I observed something. Wilde says of the author Mr. James Payn that "[h]e hunts down the obvious with the enthusiasm of a short-sighted detective." That description reminded me of a beloved Spamusement character, but I can't quite place my finger on who it is...

I wonder how hard it would be to create a "meme maker" that takes a few classic spamusements and allows you to add a caption, like jvcc's picture in the OP there. Hmmm ...
