It really is quite lovely. I used it (without base64 compression) to do this: this. You can do all sorts with it. At work I have a Greasemonkey script to extract data from a webpage and put it into a base64-encoded tab-delimited spreadsheet. Then I run a big horrible Excel macro on it for formatting. Handy, though. You can theoretically encode any data in it, I think, although you're limited by the particular browser's URI length limit, I think. But you can do simple GIF images, for example. Not that you'd write that from scratch, but YOU KNOW.

I noticed I got the date of the first comic wrong in the code (it's the 19th â€”not the 16th â€” of June, 1978.) and of course I can't change it without changing the URL. Maybe I'll post amended code if I feel like it.

I, too, like the data: URI scheme instead of the javascript: one, but IE doesn't support it. Also fun for IE: URLs must be no more than (approximately) 2^11 = 2048 characters long. That means that the entire javascript code needs to be short. The whole funkiness of that link (looks like $="<Â¢>ThÃ›EagÃ”_FirÃ›Ã‹RÃ¤izÃ†Â¯...) is a compressed version of the page which gets uncompressed by code at the end of the link. I didn't come up with it... I found it online (don't have the link with me right now)

Crazy regex contest. I think I saw that in one of those Obfuscated C contest things (which I was reading about on Wikipedia), except it was probably Obfuscated Perl, but whatever. I found it very confusing; doubly so because I didn't really know what regex was at the time. WHAT THE HELL ARE ALL THESE DOLLAR SIGNS AND OTHER PUNCTUATION MARKS?
