Male or Female?

Postby Altair IV » Wed Aug 06, 2008 9:08 am

well, this is fun. I just took the Using your browser URL history to estimate gender test, and it completely failed for me. It gave me this output:

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 61%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 39%

Site Male-Female Ratio
google.com 0.98
yahoo.com 0.9
youtube.com 1
nytimes.com 1.13
snopes.com 0.74
artistdirect.com 0.87

Not only did it get the gender wrong (I'm a planet baby!), but the list of visited sites is not very indicative of my general browsing habits. I've never deliberately visited artistdirect.com, though it looks like I must've stumbled upon it recently. But more puzzling is what it left out, like Wikipedia, which I visit all the time, and places like nasa.org and amazon.com, both of which I'm sure I've been to at least once in recent weeks.

Actually, more interesting to me is the Quantcast list of top 1000 U.S. sites that the script uses to guess gender. I've just looked through the whole list and I'm surprised by how few of them I regularly visit. I don't think I've been to more than a dozen of them in the last year. I mostly visit science and technology sites and blogs, a few news sites, and comics/webcomics pages. The rest is whatever I stumble upon that's linked from the sites I do visit (like this gender test, for example). I think it gives me an interesting, eclectic look at the (cyber)world.

Anyhoo, I've decided to post this as a poll to see how accurate it is with the spamuser community. So take the test and tell us how you did. 8)

It may have been thrown off slightly by my brother using my computer sometimes. Also it included sites I went to once or haven't visited in the past month or more.

Yeesh. Nope, that is incorrect.

Let's see what it based this information on. I'ma sort by high ratio first.

xe.com - 1.2

Yep, I check currencies there every once in a while, that is true.

deviantart.com 1.02

And I'm a member there.

yahoo.com - 0.9

Ah, I think I know why this is. It's because Yahoo! is where I check my mail. *rimshot*

photobucket.com - 0.85

Which I mainly use to host my guest strips.

walmart.com - 0.77

On the one hand, I did use it to buy Azumanga Daioh: Classs Album. On the other, I bought two of the Bond films with it. (The rest I bought at the store.)

recipezaar.com - 0.61

Heh, I was looking for a champloo recipe. Do they call it chanpuru? ...No... ...chanpuruu? ...No...

It included nickjr and noggin as girly sites. My son is the only one that goes there. Maybe it means that mothers are more likely to let their kids use their computers. And apparently, only women go to Amazon and nike. (I don't even remember going to nike.)

I did this after I had just reformatted my computer, and it told me I was mostly female. Now that I have worked up a bit of a browsing history, it told me:

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 43%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 57%

O noes! I'm a man on the internets! But only slightly more man. Androgynous?

Oh interesting fact in the world of Research Land: The stereotype exists that females have higher emotional intelligence than males. However, it now appears that androgyny, not femininity, is related to high emotional intelligence. Females do tend to endorse more androgynous traits, hence the rise of the stereotype.
