I think we're on the edge of a revolution with this stuff. Once they have a true "immersive" 3d player I think it'll really take off. And players do currently exist, but they aren't quite ready for prime time. But I have a feeling it's close. Of course, with technology, who knows? It could be next year, it could be twenty years from now.

I'm really not sure that it would take off as a general format. It'd be interesting as a gimmick, but were the technology to be adapted for purpose of general make film and TV I doubt it would be popular. Taking control of the camera away from the producers would only be done for its own sake, rather than ever becoming a convention on the level of 'pointing the camera at what you want the audience to see'. And I guess such a thing would probably necessitate some kind of special player, and people wouldn't want to buy a player only for those films which use that particular trick. Obviously, I'll be proven wrong within two weeks when the frenzied mobs at the worldwide launch of the 3D TV trample forty per cent of the Earth's population to death and the surviving sixty per cent all purchase 3D TVs, but who cares. I'll probably have been trampled to death by then.

Haha you know, that was one of the first things I thought about. Mind you, I had just been reading this and this before I came across the video stuff.
