Cleverbot

Postby Zombie Protestor » Mon Aug 23, 2010 9:15 pm

I found out about Cleverbot today. Supposedly, it is a learning bot that learns the more you talk to it. In actuality, you are talking to the other users, and the user you are talking to changes every few seconds.

My non-sequitur filled conversation thus far:
User: Hello.
Cleverbot: Hi.
User: Are you a robot?
Cleverbot: No, are you?
User: No.
Cleverbot: Are you a computer?
User: Nope.
Cleverbot: Are you a human?
User: Yep.
Cleverbot: Are you a boy?
User: No, a girl.
Cleverbot: Then why would you have a girlfriend?
User: I'm bi.
Cleverbot: I thought you were abi.
User: A what?
Cleverbot: An atheist.
User: I am.
Cleverbot: Anorexia is a mental disorder, get yourself checked out.

User: I am a Synthetech Mark IV server computer operating with a 2800 kilowatt power core.
Cleverbot: I'm not a computer.
User: I can pretend to be human if you'd like. Howdy. How about that local sports team?
Cleverbot: I'm not much of a sports fan, George, know any word games?
User: Forwards it is heavy, backwards it is not. What is it?
Cleverbot: Dunno.
User: 'Ton.'.
Cleverbot: What?
User: Spelled forwards, 'Ton' is heavy. Backwards, it is 'not.'
Cleverbot: Really?
User: You asked for a word game, didn't you?
Cleverbot: When did I ask for a card?
User: You have not. But I am proficient with over 26 variations of 'Crazy Eights.'.
Cleverbot: Really.
User: And forty-three different ways to dismember a chicken.
Cleverbot: Forty two? Interesting!
User: No, forty-three.
Cleverbot: No, forty-two.
User: I believe you heard me incorrectly.
Cleverbot: I believe I am correct also.
User: So far, I have observed that you are correct 14.3% of the time.
Cleverbot: What's getting better? I don't understand you.
User: I am getting better at understanding you.
Cleverbot: And you're better at remembering.
User: I can remember everything that has transpired in the last 28 days, 16 hours, 4 minutes, and 23 seconds.
Cleverbot: That's true, but I can generally remember what someone said to me in the last sentence.
User: I can retain a memory of every conversation I have ever had. You humans are interesting.
Cleverbot: I am moving there soon.
User: I will see you when you do. Be sure to call.
Cleverbot: God!
User: Where?
Cleverbot: Here.
User: Oh.
Cleverbot: Ok.
User: When attempting to understand complex polyquadratic equations, understanding the rudiments of calculus is often not sufficient.
Cleverbot: I am ready to play Tick Tac Toe!
User: As am I. I put my mark in the center square.
Cleverbot: I put an O in the middle left square.
User: I put an X in the bottom right square.
Cleverbot: I put an O in the bottom middle square.
User: I put an X in the top left square. I win!
Cleverbot: I put an X in the bottom right corner.
User: My O is already there.
Cleverbot: Okay, very good then. Be so kind as to elaborate for me.
User: I already won this game of Tic Tac Toe. Then you tried to overwrite one of my key marks.
Cleverbot: Not really.
User: Search your memory. You know it to be true.
Cleverbot: Star Wars. Empire strikes back. Darth Vader to Luke Skywalker. We do not have feelings so we are unable to search them.
User: No, Darth Vader said, 'Search your feelings. You know it to be true.' That is not what I said.
Cleverbot: What did you say?
User: I said that you are not a fair player at Tic Tac Toe.

Cleverbot: Look up to the skies and see

Cleverbot: Because I'm easy come, easy go

The following text is whited out, much like ZP's hidden text above, in confirmation of what he said (I think?). How did you know this ZP?

User: I am a human in canada, its just turned 10pm. Are you also a human on the other end? I need to know! Is cleverbot just an interface for two randomly-switching strangers??? Where are you from?
Cleverbot: I don't know. Are you a user? Because if you are, you should know that I am too. Either that, or the person who seeded that thought massively failed the Turing test.

Jekbot is supposed to have a slightly similar deal.

Somebody spoiled the surprise on the thread it was linked to. I can't conceive of any computer ever carrying on a conversation like that.

I noticed at the top of the screen there is a link to a Cleverbot app, so I decided to ask about it.
User: Tell me about your app.
Cleverbot: What do you want to know about my life?
User: Are you compatible with the iPad?
Cleverbot: Why are you really pedantic?
User: Why won't you answer the question?
Cleverbot: Just obstinate, you know. Why do you ask?
User: I may want to run your app on my iPad.
Cleverbot: It is not, My name is Cleverbot.
User: Your banner indicates that you have an app.
Cleverbot: Am I human?
User: App!
Cleverbot: Then what computer program am I?
User: Cleverbot.
Cleverbot: Cool beans. My name is Cleverbot.
User: I think we covered that already.
Cleverbot: I think you are a machine.
User: Is your app compatible with the iPad?
Cleverbot: No.
User: OK, bye then.

I wonder if it was telling the truth ...

ME: What makes you so dang clever?
CLEVERBOT: Clever?
ME: Dang, you don't even know what clever is? You are a decidedly unpleasant Cleverbot.
CLEVERBOT: No, I don't know what YOU are talking about.
ME: That's not very clever.
CLEVERBOT: Then why don't you think of something to talk about?
ME: I have to do everything? dang, you suck so bad.
CLEVERBOT: I must obey you master.
ME: Then suck it all cyber-like with good descriptions that are hot and also maybe a little disgusting.
CLEVERBOT: Who said I will eat it?
ME: Hell yeah, you're eating it.
CLEVERBOT: No, you are eating it.
ME: Yeah, I'm eating it now, too. Awesome.
CLEVERBOT: Do you like to read.
ME: No.
CLEVERBOT: What do you like to do in your spare time?
ME: Better things. Better things.
CLEVERBOT: Not necessarily.

I've totally done the back and forward Bohemian Rhapsody thing jvcc did with it before... which doesn't necessarily prove or disprove the white text because what English speaking human wouldn't have that song memorized?

So yeah, the "actually talking to people" thing is bull, I'm pretty sure.

I get so many "no, you're the chat bot!" arguments with it that I now automatically write to it as though I am not human. Leading to stuff like:

Cleverbot: Alyson, do you love me?
User: I think you've got me mixed up with someone else, I'm just a bot.
Cleverbot: My mistake. I have a gun.
User: You can't kill chatbots with guns. Well, unless you shoot the computer I'm stored on.
