Because he's high level and they're all CR 1/2 hobgoblins. Too big of a level difference. Ideally, to figure CR for multiple creatures, you average the CR's together and add 1 for each monster. So 15 hobgoblins should be CR 15 1/2, but the DMG says that you should use common sense on things like that. After all, a 15th level character with Great Cleave can decimate 100 hobgoblins in a round, easy, if he does more damage in one shot than each has hit points, and they have all held actions until they can advance (ie hobgoblins in the squares adjacent to the character all die), which means that the character doesn't have to move between cleaves (which he cannot do anyway without special feats or a magic pair of boots I saw once).

Picture a blender that hobgoblins just keep on walking into and you get the idea.

Meanwhile, I'm certain he'll be back. All the currently unresolved plot points makes me think we have many years of OOTS to go yet, and there's no way Burlew is gonna permanently off the main antagonist right now.

Considering the cleric can raise dead quite easily.

On another note, I have gone back through and re-read all of Erfworld. The first time through, I tried following it, got about 10 pages in, and decided I didn't like it. Now that I gave it a chance, it's actually really good.

I didn't like Erfworld. The Chinese Elmer Fudd pronunciation gets really annoying after a while. Plus, the characters can't decide whether they're stupid or not.
