1) WtF?

2) Please elaborate.

3) Seriously, WtF?

1) It's the cast of Paranoia Agent passed out around a giant Maromi.
2) The concept is that Li'l Slugger only attacks those who are suffering from some form of mental anguish and, by doing so, releases them from whatever was afflicting them. So, when the whole thing is concluded, everyone is sleeping because they are free from their own personal torments.

Meanwhile, the societal commentary of the series is based heavily on lack of identity and the trend (especially in Japan) to define one's self according to material objects and societal norms. Everyone involved couldn't seperate themselves from the fantasy world created from their own interests, thoughts, or perceived reality. In this way, the giant Maromi doll sits over the fantasy-addled citizens of post-war Japan (and perhaps beyond) as a spiritual icon looking over its blissful followers.
3) It's Japan, dude.

I love me some Paranoia Agent. As far as whacked-out anime goes, I prefer it leaps and bounds above FLCL.

So it's not some kind of surreal animated version of the Just video?

Radiohead's Just? I've never seen it, but that image would certainly make sense in the context of the song, sort of.

I made a Radiohead mix CD in which I extended the pause before the last chorus of Just, and inserted Fitter, Happier therein.

Me likey. YMMV.

Where is that CD anyway . . .

Sorry for the delay. You would think as much time as I spend on this board, I wouldn't get distracted enough to forget the Google contest thing, but I guess I did. Anyway, here's your question:

Image

1. What is this called?

2. What is it for (more specificity is better)?

3. In what year was the original type invented (or at least the year that the article described it)?

Everyone seems to mistake this thread for a simple trivia game.

Until Google comes up with a way to put an image in the search field, people do need a word to start from. The questions don't help with any starting points either. If someone stalls the game to the point of killing the thread, do they "win"?

I don't know . . . from looking at the image, several starting point keywords suggest themselves.

Yeah, I guess it is way too vague. I was in a hurry to get something up, and that was the first thing I thought of. In retrospect, that's not even a good likeness of what that is. I can change the image to a better one if people want me to.

Here's a hint: it's a trap

All right, attention seems to have been lost on this wonderful thread. While I don't know what SemiNomad's trap is, I do want to bring this back. So, in the spirit of this, I begin anew:

Can you name this creature?

By the way, SemiNomad, is it a stationary gillnet?

Yeah, sorry for killing this thread. I was aiming for difficult, and I guess i over shot a little bit.

Actually, it's a Malaise trap. Entomologists use it to catch flying insects. You set it up, leave it for a few days (or more) and come back to a whole crapload of dead bugs. It's my favorite way to catch insects, tied with shinine a light at a sheet at night and catching stuff that comes to it.

I also know what that critter in the picture is, but i'll let someone else have a go at it.
