As I understand it he also wrote the scripts for the BBC radio and TV series, which I hear are quite good. Which goes to show you more is involved than simply the script. Personally I think the director concentrated too hard on having a coherent plot (the radio and TV series are infamous for their inconsistencies) and in editing it down to a manageable movie length managed to edit out the funny bits. Doesn't matter how good the script is if the director and actors don't "get it".

Also: Shoehorned-in love story, featuring painful awkward-declaration-of-love-speech. UAGH IT HURTS SO MUCH I mean I never really liked HHGTTG anyway, but the film was awful.
