Mash-ups

Postby James » Tue Jan 30, 2007 5:31 pm

You know those musical mash-up thingies? Where they take two songs and crash them into each other? Well Dan just sent me a link to a site that has over 2500 of the bloody things. A lot of the time I don't see the point, but it's worthy of a mention just for sheer weight of numbers. You can listen to them all through an in-browser player or download the individual MP3s. There used to be seven large volumes available by torrent, but apparently they no longer work.

I remember when MTV had a mash-up oriented show.

The only episode I saw, and maybe the only one they even did, I dunno, was Linkin Park and Jay-Z.

It went surprisingly well.

Hearing "Papercut" set to "Big Pimpin'"s music is still hilarious.

I have two that the local radio station offered on their site, although I have yet to check to see if they are offered on James's (the radio station took them off, though).

This was one of them.

Then there was this one, a mashup featuring the music from The Eagles's Hotel California, performed live, with the singing from Eminem's I'm Sorry Mama.

I heard a thing once which mixed Country House (by Blur) with Gay Bar (by Electrix Six). It was called Gay House, and was awesomely magnificent.

Aww, it's not on the list here. Shame.

Out of strictly personal preference, I'm partial to this one.

I picked out a few I thought I'd enjoy, and I usually did. I think I could probably just listen to them all straight through if I needed a few hours of background music.

My favourite from that lot has been Bloc Party's Banquet mixed with Outkast's B.O.B. The end result is better than both songs alone, which is naturally the sign of a spiffing mashup.
