Here's another web experiment:

It's like a choose-your-own-adventure book, although you get to add options and write the next page.

I hope it works. I wrote it very quickly. Let me know how it goes.

if you could, it would be useful to be able to have one of the options (such as "go back to where you came from") link back to a previous page.

Seems to work pretty well. Is there another type of area other than "room." I went to the beach, and there weren't any rooms so I had to invent a pier.

is there a time delay? my stuff doesn't save now that I've re-entered the game.

"Room" is a loosely-used term. You could actually create an action that doesn't move the player, like "Drink a beer". Then the new "room" would conceptually be the same as the old room.

That's also the problem with back-linking. You might be "undo-ing" something rather than just moving the player.

It'll be interesting to see what limitations like this are found, and how they might be overcome. That is -- if people keep building...

Your browser could be caching the old page. Try a reload. Saving should be instant.

I created a link in the trunk page to the "inside the trunk" page which is item 11, but there isn't any text to show this.

I just checked in firefox and the page exists, as does the subsequent page, but the link to it on the trunk page is still missing.

Yeah, no, mine isn't showing up either. I mean, the page is there, but the link isn't appearing on the page for the room it leads from.

Hm. No errors of any kind? Which browser?

No errors. Firefox. I tried loading the page that should link to it in IE, and it still showed no link. I've tried refreshing several times. I wrote another one, which didn't show up either, and came back to check the first one, and it's still not there. I'm guessing the operation must have gone through, because the page is on the site. But why is the link not appearing? WHY?

Ohhh, a couple of the original three rooms might not have had the right permissions set in order to be update-able. Try again?

Simply bookmark the exponentially increasing number of branch points and, hey presto!

As far as HTML, no I strip it out. You can use CAPS for EMPHASIS if you want!

No, which was a design decision I was worried about at first. But now I'm curious to see how it plays out.

I could see making a fancier version of this where you could also create objects to be placed in rooms, and then certain rooms being locked unless you have a certain object. But that's quite a bit more work, because then you have to start keeping track of the character's state on the server side, etc.

It's not, you know, terribly hard to do, but I figured, start simply and see where it goes.

I actually think it's quite cool, for example, that what happens when you go down the ladder changes depending on if you pick grass first or not.
