Speaking of computer woes, I think mine contracted a fake antivirus thing? I've tried running a few things to get rid of it, but I don't know if it's completely gone. Gaaah.

AdBlock Plus. NoScript. Without those two extensions, I would probably have a seizure everytime I tried to browse the web. Or I'd gouge my eyes out. Maybe both.

a lot of times the fake antivirus comes with a rootkit and the best method to get rid of it is to reformat your computer. and not just reformat, but actually delete the partitions *then* recreate them, *then* reinstall the OS. there are ways to clean them out, but it takes about as long to clean it as it does to reformat, and reformatting -- if done properly -- will remove it for sure.

100% with you there! The funny thing is I don't mind ads at all. It's when the flash and jump around and wiggle and do absolutely everything they can to get my attention. The problem is, of course, I visit sites for the CONTENT, not for the ads. Since internet ads show no sign of behaving themselves and sitting in the background where they belong, bada-bing, Adblock Plus it is!

jvcc: After you reinstall the machine, you have to douse it with cleansing fire, blast it out of an airlock, and nuke it from orbit. Collect the resulting molecules and reassemble them into a computer. The reconstituted computer has about a 70% chance of still being rootkitted, so you might have to do it several times.

Seriously, assuming you care about your data, what I would do (and have done) with a envirused computer is to take it completely off the network and then use a different computer to investigate the problem online. Anything you want to run on the infected machine you can download onto a USB flash drive. A reasonable step for you would be to go here, read the instructions, and make a post in the relevant forum asking what to do.

I would try to run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Trend Micro's HijackThis to diagnose (and maybe even fix) the problem. I say "try" because sometimes the malware will prevent you from doing this. If you do manage to diagnose the problem, it's helpful to look it up to see how it spreads. (In one case I had to completely disable all my Adobe Acrobat Reader browser plugins because there was an unpatched exploit in the wild.) If it's a very stubborn or crafty infection, you'll probably to run some heavy-duty and/or specific-to-your-situation software... which is where forums like bleepingcomputer are very helpful.

In any case, assuming you take the machine off the network, you always have the option of reinstalling the whole machine later if the salvaging effort fails.

Sensible advice, but I find browsing with NoScript on kind of annoying. I know you can set up exceptions and so on, but it turns out I'm incredibly lazy.

yeah, normally i would not even suggest a reformat for *most* problems, but i hate using those tools only to see the virus keep coming back because it had a rootkit the tools didn't remove. malwarebytes is about 80% effective on these types of viruses but only if it's run in safe mode. there are tools out there which will (theoretically) remove it all, but by the time you've done all the removal, the computer could have been reinstalled from scratch and restored.

Where do you people even find all these viruses and install all this malware?
SERIOUSLY. I was asked to fix two computers last week. (I'm not a professional IT person but I'm cheap.. well.. free)
The amount of crap I found on those things... I mean.. it's porn right? You're all trying to download creepy porn programs from dodgy Eastern European web sites, right?
I never have any problems with my computer because I swore off Internet Explorer and Eastern European jizz parties.

Perhaps a hug for Dusk would be more in order. Alternatively, an Eastern European jizz party.

blegh okay so just adding another level of weirdness: I've given up on the whole being a dude thing because it's kind of dumb and I've decided it isn't really me.

If I recall correctly, Portals, you are quite young. There are many, many ladders still to climb, the wisdom is knowing which steps are solid and which are ephemeral. I wish you every luck in your quest and remember, all of us are here to help.

Pff screw being yourself. Be whoever you want on any given day.
Try and understand that there's not as much pressure on you to be a certain person as you may believe.... would be my advice if you asked for it.
But you didn't. I hate it when people do that. Sorry.

Take my advice and do whatever you feel like doing regardless of other people's opinions, especially mine. Stop capitulating to the demands of others right now.

There are alternatives to those three.

Alternatives include blindly following me and nothing else.
