Etiquette is dead and buried. It's all about netiquette now. IT IS RUDE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS

I like your style.

Regarding manners and etiquette, I think the important thing is not the specifics of the conventions you happen to adhere to, but rather the fact that they indicate you are putting some thought into your interaction with others, and paying them some consideration. The particular rules have inevitably changed, and are becoming much less universal and codified, but I think the only thing worth getting up in arms about is an actual reduction in the amount of attention we pay to one another, and how others might feel about our actions. Not that pissing people off should always be avoided, but actions that might reasonably expected to evoke such a reaction should really only be engaged in with prior knowledge and good reason.

In other words: don't be a dick.

(I considered putting that whole lot in all-caps, but it would be too painful to read.)

Those eyes!

Your baby is adorable and adorably clothed. I'm still pretty excited that she was born on my birthday.

Mine can now walk with small household appliances. He turned a year old this week, and I can hardly believe it.

Your child is also adorable, Chrism. Reminds me of one at the nursery where I work.

Does anyone know what the word "causy" might mean? I'm reading from the journal of two late Victorian poets and one of them called Yeats "causy," and she herself puts it in quotes. Some alternate spelling like "causey" might be possible. The OED changes it to "causey," but doesn't list it as an adjective. I'm thinking it could be English or Irish slang, perhaps.

My first guess would be someone or something excessively or irritatingly concerned with worthy causes, but that seems like a fairly modern word form. I don't know; I barely speak the language.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Brilliant. The full sentence is: "At dinner Yeats is fearfully shy at first, doctrinaire and ‘causy,' but gradually he becomes warm and vivid in his monologuing."

That was also my guess. People have long added "-y" to things, and that would be a good context for that meaning of cause.

So, I've only just become aware that the Scottish government is planning to hold a referendum for independence in 2014. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it's likely that Scotland will become an independent country? I'm guessing that it may not be the best timing given the current economic climate, and I'm not sure how many referendums they've had in the past. But that could be big news, both for Scotland and the UK, if that goes through.

Also, yesterday I was reading a world atlas from 2002 (to kill time) and it mentioned how the government of New Zealand began giving aid to the semi-autonomous nation of Niue in order to discourage its citizens from immigrating to New Zealand. It struck me that my opinions regarding immigration issues had been confined by American politic rhetoric which essentially discusses only two options (i.e., in simplified terms, prevent immigration through border control and deportation or make it easier for people to become citizens). I'm not saying that I agree with New Zealand's policies regarding Niue (I'm not well enough informed about them to even begin to develop an opinion), but it did seem to me to be a creative solution, or at least one that has not been discussed in the US, as far as I'm aware. I don't know if it will need to be anyway since the recession has made the US a less appealing place to live anyway. I just find this interesting.

I don't really know about Scottish independence. Well as far as I can gather the Scottish seem broadly down with it, but I certainly couldn't comment on the ramifications.

I have heard that everyone in England is rather keen for them to get independence (I'm fairly sure there'd be a sneaky deal that saw England keep the North Sea oil and Scotland become a third world country) and a number of Scottish people would rather keep themselves attached to England and continue to receive massive funding for their Parliament, education etc. It seems quite funny now. I'm sure I'm all too ill-informed, but the existence a Scottish Parliament with limited powers except to use money from the 'proper' Parliament to subsidise lots of stuff seems ridiculously over indulgent to me. The same goes for the Welsh Assembly.

I am sort of considering an experiment in mustachery. I'm curious about what it would look like, it is a bit hot for beards right now, and if I don't like it I've got the options of either going clean shaven or growing the rest back.
