I started a paid internship as a web developer. It's supposed to last a couple months, and at the end I should have built up enough credibility that one of the teams wants to hire me. Fortunately, after 2 and a half weeks, one of the teams wants to bring me onboard. So I guess I'm pretty harpy.

Oh yea, I bought a new car on the 6th. Picked it up on the 7th. Have been driving around happy for a week and a half now, except when I have to park around other cars...that's a little unhappy, as my last car was dinged within 2 hours of me owning it and I am paranoid.

Here are some pictures of cars like mine, not my car, but they look enough like it:

my car got a nice crumple on the back passenger side door within two days of buying it brand new. then i backed into a co-workers car when i was still working at a pizza place. at that point i decided to just leave them to remind me that life just isn't fair sometimes...

Congrats, Jek, on the engagement! And congrats, Skimba, on the car.

I've bought my tickets, so my adventures overseas will play out thus: I'm going to arrive in Dublin on July 1 and at some point take a ferry to Great Britain (they don't have tickets for July available online yet). I'll leave again from Dublin airport July 23 and the conference I'm attending is in London July 11-12. I know some classmates who will be staying at Oxford for a study abroad program from June-July, so I'll have some free floors to sleep on. Other than that I'll have a lot of free time to wander.

Very good jvcc. If you have some spare time, and I am around, we shall meet. It's decided. Oxford is a terribly nice place. You may also visit Cambridge, which is the home of my sister and with which I am somewhat familiar.

I missed out on a job which, if I'm being entirely honest, I felt was a bit beyond me at this stage. However, as a result of it, I'm going to be lecturing next semester. That's a bit daunting, but it's equally exciting.

Aw yiss. What a great opportunity! Do you have any teaching or tutoring experience?

A bit, but not a lot. I'm not sure if it's done this way at any other university, but here you just sort of learn on the job while you do your PhD. You start off working in lab sessions and doing bits of demonstrating and if you're good at that and enjoy it, they might throw you into tutorials or give you the odd lecture. If I get a reasonable number of lectures next semester I'll be delighted.

How's that lecturing gig goin'?

In my own happy news, I submitted a draft article to an academic journal and got asked to revise and resubmit. The managing editor wrote, "Typically, a 'revise and resubmit' does not guarantee publication, but the editors do believe that the piece has a great deal of promise."

So, I am super stoked.

That's wonderful news! I got some news with a similar taste, that is to say, news that looks pretty good for down the road, but doesn't do much now. I Went through the interview process for VP positions in my board this past summer (I did so as well 2 years before, the soonest I could to get experience) and I was given the "consider for placement" designation, meaning I could get a VP gig tomorrow if there were one. Therein lies the rub, as at the same time they told me they had been over-hiring VPs and giving them system jobs, meaning they have to find those people schools before bringing in people off the list, so I'm looking at a couple of years at least, based on what they can foresee. So, yeah. Crack the champagne, but it will still have to be cheap champagne.

Good news all round. I've (probably) got a job teaching English in South Korea. Gotta get my documents dealt with, and also give the contract a close inspection. But there you go.

Hmmmmm. After perusing the contract with care, I don't think I like it very much. I've replied to them with my concerns and a new, rewritten contract will fall into my inbox in the future. I still suspect it won't be something I want. Never mind. I can continue my search.

Wow, care to share some of the pressing concerns in case anyone else I know goes that route, so that I might warn them of things to watch for? Is it working conditions or the length of time you stay before they will fly you home or something?
