Well, I've made it 2/3 of the way through the first episode of Dead Set. The problem with me watching scary and/or stressful shows or movies by myself is that I inevitably end up talking to the screen or trying to block it with my hands like a madperson. I'll try to watch the third part after I post this.

Dead Set? I saw the very last episode of that and I had never heard of it and I thought it was rather good and wanted to see the rest. I NEVER GOT MY WISH

It's all on YouTuuuube.

I finished the episode. It was great.

I liked the ending.

Mandatory mention of Charlie Brooker.

Brooker is fantastic. I've been enjoying 10 O'Clock Live and Screenwipe, too.

Sad news for old school Doctor Who fans: Nicholas Courtney has passed away.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, for those... ahem... who never knew the actor's name. Like me, until I heard about this.

I've been watching the Danish crime drama The Killing on iPlayer recently. It's certainly pretty good, but I must confess I'm also generally interested in seeing Scandinavian stuff because of the whole familial connection. Obviously Sweden and Denmark are not the same, but hey, it's nearby. Also, it's nice to see international film and TV in general.

Anyway, there's something I find kind of funny: the Danes all sound kind of German to me if I don't concentrate too hard on the sound of what they're saying, but Lund's Swedish boyfriend, who is presumably speaking Danish, sounds to my idiot ears like he's speaking Swedish. THE POWER OF ACCENTS (particularly when the relevant languages exist on a continuum like the Scandinavian ones do).

So that's my dumb observation. I offer no insight on the programme itself.

I encounter Scandinavian and central European accents so rarely, I probably wouldn't know what languages were being spoken or in what accents.

Eh from this far away Sweden, Denmark, and Norway are all more or less the same.

Finland, though, is definitely different.

Norway will always hold a special place in my heart because of Dead Snow, though.

No, because their language is from a completely different family. Finnish is actually much closer to Hungarian than the Danish-Norwegian-Swedish continuum.

Anyway, here are some randomly-selected examples (I have no idea what they're about) of the relevant languages which may or may not illustrate what I'm talking about:

Svensk
Dansk
Deutsch

As I understand it, there's quite a lot of overlapping vocabulary and grammar between Swedish and Danish, but the overall sound of the latter has a lot in common with German, I think. Perhaps it's all the abruptly ending vowels or something. Or it could just be that I'm more familiar with the sound of Swedish.

Or it may be that nobody cares.

I opened all of those and they started talking all at once. HRGRHBRGRGLLHRG it is quite disconcerting.

Danish sounds rather nice. I'm sure the things she's saying are shocking and foul.

Am I right in thinking that the Finnish language only really came into use following the Second World War?

I have absolutely no idea where I got that from then.

Alternative comment: I know somebody who tried to teach themselves Finnish. The CD they got to help them learn seemed to be mostly occupied with the location of the local sauna.

UPDATE: I asked my mum, and apparently he's speaking Swedish. So it's actually the power of mutual intelligibility. I feel a little foolish, but it's still pretty interesting.

I don't know whether this falls under television or movies, but I can't stop watching period dramas! I've found three different channels on YouTube that cater specifically to them, and they're like a drug. The problem is that some of them, like North and South and The Moth, are really good, and some of them are really poopcakes, like Little Dorrit. For the last one, I don't think that it's particularly the fault of the filmmakers, but more so that Dickens is really sadistic towards his female characters. They meekly and patiently suffer endless abuse, all the while remaining without personalities.

This is one of the greatest things to happen (in my awesome opinion) that crosses TV with internets.

Does anyone know when the new series of QI and/or Would I Lie to You? are going to air in the UK? According to Wiki, there's going to be an episode of the latter in which Robert Webb and Sir Terry Wogan are on David Mitchell's team, and that's going to be...weird. But I'm still excited to see it.

I can tell you that somebody I know actually attended the recording of the QI Christmas Special a few weeks ago.

Likers of British comedies: Lead Balloon has started again. I know I'm a few weeks late with this news, but it's good news nonetheless. I urge you all to watch it, but to start with the first series. This one isn't quite as good as that yet.

Now for a quote from the woman who was removed from The Apprentice this week, when she was asked why she shouldn't be fired:
