Hey, cool.

Sometimes I wish I was capable of such refined coding. Then I remember that the reason I'm not is that it would probably take some sort of work and effort to get there.

I bet all the ladies call you surprisingly portable.

No, I don't know what that implies either.

The International Obfuscated C Code Contest, as I understand it, is an opportunity for coders to throw consideration for other programmers out of the window and write deliberately incomprehensible code that nevertheless functions as intended. I believe recognition is awarded for particular achievements such as improbably short programs, self-documenting programs, inventive structure, and so on. I'm by no means an expert (I've only briefly read about it a few times), so that explanation may be any of a great number of degrees of wrong, but it's something which I wish I was more naturally attuned for, and which I would actually bother to put more work into.

It is a horrendously geeky thing, though.

My closest brush with anything of the sort was merely understanding this absurdly terse Perl fizzbuzz program (and I had to look up what the + was all about):

Code: Select all
print+(fizz)[$_%3].(buzz)[$_%5]||$_,$/for 1..shift

Congratulations! I think. If I understand it correctly, most portable would mean it was able to be used with multiple platforms.

Although a few categories are reused, in general they invent the categories to fit whoever they feel should win, so the primary recognition is always the obfuscation.

Yes, but the keyword in my category is surprisingly :)

Before I knew that the contest involved computer programming, I kept thinking that you had managed to make some real-world thing surprisingly portable, like an elephant.

I had thought he was surprisingly portable at first.

The examples I provided might (or might not) still provide valid samples of the kinds of specific achievements recognized.

Programming is how I make my living and I've used all sorts of flavors of C and C-like languages over the years (C/C++/C#/java/etc) so I can appreciate how awesome this is. I hope they post the winning code soon so I can take a look.

Is this where we brag about shite we've done? If so, I got my bear story (that got failed by my tutor) published in a book (where said tutor is thanked by the editors for assisting, whereas I normally thank him for teaching me what not to use in my stories).
