DISCLAIMER: If you believe in personal privacy as far as browsing habits go, then navigate away from this post.

So we're covering DOS command line commands and I found out something interesting. Even if someone has cleared their browsing history, you can do the following to retrieve it:
  1. Open the Command Prompt, either via the easy way of Windows Key + R, type in cmd, and press enter or by going to Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt
  2. type the following (no quotes): "ipconfig /displaydns > dnslog.txt"
  3. Note the directory that you're in, navigate to it in windows, and open the .txt file you created.

One thing to note is that it doesn't exactly list the websites visited, it lists any websites your computer had to reference. If there's an ad on a website that links to www.annoyingads.com, it shows up, as do actual website visits.

SORRY FELLOW GUYS I know you like your "clear browsing history" button.

you're already at the command line, just type "notepad dnslog.txt" :)

yes, it apparently even works while in porn, uh i mean, "private browsing" mode. :| although if you are going to be entering commands anyway, a quick "ipconfig /flushdns" will make it all go away until you start browsing the internet again

You know, I have never even once cleared my browser history, aside for starting a new browser profile from scratch. But I will keep this in mind for when the inevitable robopocalypse reduces the few remaining nations to crumbling paranoid police states.

If a guy watches porn and his girlfriend or wife find out, it's bad.

If the guy finds out that she has watched it, then that is OMG SO HOT.

my point is, if someone is knowledgeable enough to know how to do the /displaydns switch, they've probably heard of the more common /flushdns as well.

Well, yeah. I'm not saying the person doing the porn browsing should be looking up the dns. The person wanting to snoop, which would probably be a girlfriend or wife, would be the one using this tip.

I'm not sure what significant other would object to porn unless it is replacing actual intimacy or they're prudish or something.

Are you kidding?! I can very easily see all sorts of legitimate issues people might have with their partners watching porn. Some might see it as a form of unfaithfulness; others might see it as inherently immoral. There are certainly plenty of feminist arguments against pornography, claims that it has a corrosive effect on the nature of sexuality, and concerns for performers involved. Then of course there are those who would prohibit it on religious grounds.

Sure, some people are very laid-back and permissive about this sort of thing, and that does seem to be the direction society is moving in, but it's still very much a taboo, and there are some convincing reasons for people's uneasiness about it. There is something to be said for having a more relaxed attitude towards sex and so on, of course, but the conversation is still far from over. To reduce all these concerns to prudishness is unfairly dismissive.

Anyway, with regards to keeping a clean history, I guess my input would be that it might not be a great idea to keep too many secrets from your partner, but everybody probably has some, so I don't really know.

Perhaps I'm just not keeping up with the world.

Probably fighting a losing battle. But I kind if meant that if you are one who watches porn to that extent, how did you end up with a significant other who abhors it so? And if you have to hide it, is your relationship in good condition? Obviously if it's affecting intimacy and such that's a legitimate concern. I realise there are people who say the availability of anything anytime detracts from the actual business in the physical world, but for the standard porn in moderation porn person...oh god I'm rambling...or blurt essaying.

I agree with you on these points: hiding your porn-watching habits within the context of a relationship seems like shady business however you cut it. Either your partner is OK with it and you're just being needlessly secretive, or they're not and you're hiding something relevant to your relationship. Neither seems sensible.

Outside of the context of a relationship, however, I think it's entirely rational and probably OK to hide stuff you've been doing online. If other people ever use your computer, or might see you using it, you don't necessarily want them seeing everything you've been up to on the Web, and there's not really the same requirement for moral openness and openness in general with less intimate acquaintances. A relationship is, to put it unpleasantly coldly, kind of like a contract (albeit with unwritten and probably somewhat fluid terms); a friendship is less so, and an acquaintance isn't at all. Privacy is fine, and some things are meant to be private.

I think I've never seen the words "porn" and "fluid" used in the same statement and it be in a tasteful context.

Yes, I know that some people are the "Hey, let's watch a dirty movie while we do it" kind of people. But a lot of people, my wife for instance, saw heavy porn use break up a relationship and so she's kind of insecure about its presence. We tried doing the "let's watch it during" thing and it just turned out awkward for me as I didn't want to pay attention to it and insult her.

Another argument is you might want to keep tabs on your kids' browsing, but that's a whole other ethical discussion.

I just don't like the implied assumption that men are porn watchers and women are porn abhorrers. Ab horrors.

Also, if you're trying to clear your search history it might just be because other people, including or excluding a significant other, use your computer sometimes. That doesn't even mean that you're ashamed of viewing porn, just that you don't want people that intimately acquainted with your particular tastes.

I refer you to the second paragraph of my second post in this thread. In other words, I agree with you. And ZP is right, it's especially important to be careful about what you expose kids to.

Right, I was just going with the girlfriend/wife thing that ZP said and encompassing it into a standard adult committed relationship of two persons, in which the porn in question was of consenting adults.

Not all women abhor it and studies show can enjoy it just as much as the male half. But you can't tell me that just as many women view it or even half as many women view it as men. A lot of the porn out there is definitely centered around women as objects and I can see that some women might enjoy that idea of being an object, I just can't see the women who do watch porn flipping over to the bukkake section.

Between you, me, and the Google webcrawler, I can't see anyone flipping over to that. It's like the slapstick comedy of the porn world. Just needs a slide whistle and whoopie cushion to complete the experience. ;)

I don't know what the demographics for porn viewership are. Popular opinion is that men watch it more and that's probably true. Most porn with female actresses objectifies them, as you say, in very troubling ways, but you can push the moral question to the back of your head when watching it. Similar to how you know its wrong to buy a cheap product that was made by what is essentially slave labor in a foreign country, yet you still do it all the time. I guess my point is there's a guilt element to the act itself and you don't approve of the system that created it, but it is beyond your will or your power to stop or alter either. Also, I hope that not all men who watch porn which objectifies women necessarily enjoy the objectification aspect.

There has also been a significant rise of femdom, gay, shemale, and CFNM (clothed female naked male) porn in recent years that suggests less female objectification centering. Not at all saying it's not still happening.

It'd be interesting to find out who writes/produces porn (men or women or other information) and how much say the actors and actresses have in what is said or done.

Oh, something else that I thought was interesting--and this will possibly reveal a bit too much about how I spend my free time--is that men in straight porn tend to have straight penises and men in gay porn tend to have curved ones. This conclusion is based on a discussion between my gay friend and me. I'm not sure what the purpose behind that would be, other than the most basic word association of straight penis=straight man which could possibly affirm the male viewer's heterosexuality.
