Yeah, XKCD isn't funny often enough for me to desire to keep up with it.

However, if you want all the geeky humor without the other bits, there's Irregular Webcomic! for those who aren't aware of it. I'm not even sure of where I heard it. Was it here? Anyway, the guy takes LEGOs and roleplaying miniatures and makes comic stories. He has a bunch of different themes which intertwine and stuff. And you get jokes like the one in space where each progressive frame is brighter and more washed out, and the explanation is that they're approaching the speed of light, so their gamma's increasing. :lol:

Graham's number (g64) is the largest number ever used in a serious mathematical proof. It uses Knuth's up-arrow notation.

Knuth's up-arrow notation is a way to write big numbers. It consists of two numbers with some number of up-arrows between them (e.g.: 2^^^3). X^^^...^^Y, with N up-arrows, is equal to

X^^...^^X^^...^^X^^........^^X

Where you have Y Xs, each separated by N-1 up-arrows. One up-arrow is raising to a power.

Examples:
3^3 = 9
3^^3 = 3^3^3 = 3^(9) = 19683
3^^^3 = 3^^3^^3 = 3^^19683 = something really unbelievably huge.

Anyway. Graham's number is g64 where gn = 3^^...^^3, with gn-1 up-arrows. g1 = 3^^^^3.

And the Ackermann function (expressed as A(m,n)) gets freakishly huge unbelievably quickly. At (7,7), it's too large to be written with any mere mortal notation.

You can see how combining those gets you a number too large to even begin to comprehend. Graham's number alone is unthinkably huge. Putting it into the Ackermann function... It's like taking awesome and raising it to the superlative. Can you express that with any number that is reasonable? No.
