Well, we're all adults here, right?

"TMI" doesn't strike me as an "adults only" warning so much as an "I didn't want to know that" warning. If he were concerned about younger readers, I would expect a "NSFW", even though that actually refers to workplace-appropriateness.

Yes, but in context the information that he was fearing he might be divulging too much of was of an adult nature. Also, I needed a segue into what I wanted to talk about.

Maybe we should consider an "adult topic" type thread? I'm not sure what our stalwart moderators think.

I'd be all for this. Then I wouldn't feel creepy posting in the Random Thoughts thread.

I feel like they should rethink selling this.

I also just want to clarify that I had a purely psychological orgasm, which I thought was interesting and worthy of a follow up investigation. I was not posting about a normal orgasm. As much as I appreciate and feel connected to the members of this forum, I don't feel compelled to inform you every time one of those happens.

More out of curiosity and not perversity, I'm wondering how you went about doing this.

EDIT: I realized my avatar makes this post extra creepy.

The Wizard of Righteousness/Shepherd of Oz is judging me.

The how was a combination of not being sober and listening to a song I really like on good quality headphones.

But I mean, at best listening to a really good song gives me chills all over. I can't imagine getting to that kind of state from it. Now if you were thinking purely sexy thoughts and imagining things were happening without any self-contact, maybe I could see it.

I'm not so sure about Ayn Rand porn, though, it'd probably involve hours-long speeches. Or just be hours-long speeches. :P

And you wouldn't even really have to changed the name of The Fountainhead (which is nice, since the name's the best thing about that book :P ).

Does anyone know where I might look for a scientific/psychological explanation for why young women might be attracted to older men that doesn't assume that the young women have daddy issues and/or are responding on an evolutionary level to older men's dominance and accumulation of resources? In general, I think that this is an interesting sexual phenomenon, but I also want to find an explanation that applies to me. So far the only two explanations I've been able to find are those already mentioned. I can't imagine that I find older men to be prime mating partners, since I don't and never have had a strong desire have children, and I'm also attracted to women, whom I have no chance of successfully having children with (and my body must know that).

I'm not worried about this (my sexual preferences change often enough that they never worry me too much), but I do dislike not understanding things.

So, frame what I'm about to say in a discussion purely about attraction. A lot of older men have a confidence that comes from life experience, whereas youthful confidence is more often found in people who are full of themselves as they generally cannot have had enough experience to justify the way they carry themselves. Not wanting to be with self-centred jerks, the women who find themselves attracted to older men are likely taking an alternative that still steers themselves toward someone secure and confident (and thus "no muss, no fuss", emotions-wise so they don't have to deal with that, for various reasons that could range from not wanting to deal with that BS to wanting their own emotions to be the only ones needing to be addressed), but avoids people whose confidence is derived from self-love or feelings of innate and perhaps undeserved superiority or desirability.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. That would be my guess anyway. I've (almost) always liked 'em younger than me. However, I have had and still do have, since the appx. age of 26, quite a few older male friends, whom I've enjoyed many talks and days with, without any sexual nature. I'd have to say it is mostly due to them being over those 'me-me-me' and 'let's get drunk and screw' phases of their lives and actually understanding life better than they did at those younger ages.

How much of an impact did the first photos of Earth from space have? Obviously it was a symbolic landmark in terms of achievement, but it only really occurred to me today how much I take for granted the image of the planet we live on. We'd had globes for hundreds of years, and I believe mapping had been accurate enough to give a good idea of the shape of things for one or two hundred years before the space programme got started, so we could quite well predict what it would look like, but were the first actual photographs a revelation? Had we been depicting the Earth hanging in space artificially much before that, or was it mainly just globes on desks? How familiar did the image seem to the public as they first saw it?

It seems to me that the most common fault for Americans imitating South-East English accents is not to lengthen their As. I've heard many otherwise fairly convincing attempts undermined by the detail.

Of course, there are many English accents that don't lengthen their As, but these are not they. It's strange to me, because of all the details one has to command to alter one's accent, the length of vowels would be among the easiest.

I'm no good at accents.

Random thought: I sure miss Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil. That show was great. One of the many intro songs, although I don't know what's up with the video part.

Funnily enough, I've been watching a few Loren Bouchard/H. Jon Benjamin/etc. programmes recently. I've never seen that one, but it came up in my background reading. Because, you know, you have to do research about the things you're watching. Clearly.

One of my few relatively clear memories from childhood was being told off by my teacher in Year 6 (so I would have been 10 or 11; probably 10). She was sitting at her desk at the front of the classroom, and I was standing to her right. As she chastised me for whatever it was (of that detail I have no recollection, perhaps conveniently), she fixed me with an intense and aggressive gaze, except that her eyes kept darting around, as though she was so angry she couldn't get them to keep still. It's probably those restless eyes that made the memory stick.

Anyway, I'd always assumed she was just a bit weird, but I just discovered nystagmus, and now I'm wondering whether she had that. Perhaps her eyes were doing that all the time and I just didn't notice when I wasn't stuck in their direct path. It's quite strange to suddenly have this new layer to that long-standing memory.

Meant to be in Albuquerque by now, but oops a flight delay put me in a quiet country town called Denver until noon tomorrow. I was greeted by a charming but ominous sign indicating where to find baggage claim and tornado shelters. Also, there are mountains! Both on land and on license plates! How did they manage to shrink them, I wonder?
